The Rehabilitation
Department at SMH is dedicated to helping patients get past
the hurdles of recovery and back to their lives, work, family
and independent living. SMH therapy offers a full continuum of
rehabilitation services in an inpatient and outpatient setting
which include adult and pediatric physical, occupational and
speech therapy. The SMH Rehabilitation Department is comprised
of highly qualified therapists trained to help patients regain
an optimum level of independence and overall health. SMH
therapies work in partnership with a physician to make sure
all requested therapies are provided as requested.

Acute |
|
| |
Once arrangements have been made and the admission is endorsed
by your physician, you will be discharged from your current
setting and transferred to the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. If
transfer is being made from another hospital, our Social
Worker will help plan for transportation.

Physical |
|
| |
The primary focus of SMH physical therapy involves the
evaluation and prevention of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular
disorders. SMH physical therapists provide services that help
restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent
or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering
from injuries or disease. Physical therapy helps restore,
maintain, and promote overall fitness and health.

Occupational |
|
| |
SMH Occupational
Therapists are trained to assist people of all ages to perform
the practical tasks that occupy their lives. Occupational
therapists work with adults who have conditions that are
mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally
disabling. They also help them to develop, recover, or
maintain daily living and work skills. SMH occupational
therapists help patients not only to improve their basic motor
functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for
permanent loss of function.

Speech |
|
| |
SMH speech therapy
treats patients with speech, language, cognitive and
swallowing disorders with the goal of enhancing communication.
Adult patients may have speech and language problems caused by
a stroke or traumatic brain injury, or those associated with
diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Multiple Sclerosis.
Patients with these medical issues often have difficulty
pronouncing words accurately, finding words to express
themselves or speaking loudly or clearly enough. Speech
therapy patients also have trouble understanding speech and
difficulty reading or writing words in the way they once
could. Common conditions treated with speech therapy include:
dementia, stuttering, dyslexia, developmental delays or
learning problems.

Aquatic |
|
| |
SMH Aquatic Therapy
uses the physical properties of water to assist in patient
healing and exercise performance. Aquatic therapy provides
skilled individualized therapy programs for patients with
acute and chronic musculoskeletal and neuromuscular
dysfunction. Aquatics are part of a comprehensive integrated
land-pool rehabilitation program that focuses on improving the
patient’s functional abilities on land. SMH therapists are
trained to help maximize the use of the physical properties of
water to address impairments, sports injuries, functional
limitations, disabilities or changes in physical function and
health status resulting from injury, disease, or other causes.

Specialized Women’s
Services |
|
| |
Often following a
recent birth or with age, women experience incontinence
(bladder leakage). While this condition does usually affect
older women more than younger, it doesn't have to be a side
effect of aging. If a medical evaluation is given when
symptoms of incontinence are recognized, a doctor can suggest
a host of treatments that can improve or eliminate the
condition to include physical therapy. Whether in your
twenties or seventies, incontinence should not be thought of
as a condition that patients “just have to live with.”
SMH’s specialty women’s services can also evaluate and design
an individual treatment program for women with pre and
post-partum musculoskeletal pain, mild prolapsed internal
organs, pelvic pain and osteoporosis. Talk to your doctor or
call us to see if this program is right for you. |
