As a 501(c)(3), SMH
is a community-centered non-profit hospital that ensures the
residents of Saline County will continue to receive the best
health care possible into the future.
Q: What is a not-for-profit hospital?
How does that differ from a for-profit hospital?
A: From a business standpoint, for-profit hospitals
generate profits for investors and stakeholders while
not-for-profit hospitals are often operated by a community,
government or faith-based organization. Not-for-profits
reinvest proceeds in hospital improvements and other
community-strengthening channels. Specifically, a 501(c)(3)
organization is a not-for-profit entity that is exempt from
taxes. SMH is community-based with local citizen
representation on a governing board of directors.
Q: How is Saline Memorial Hospital
currently managed?
A: SMH is an acute care facility which operates under
the direction of an administrator and is governed by a
Governing Board of Directors. The SMH Board of Directors is
committed to ensuring that the quality of health care provided
to our community is sustained and supported.
Q: What are some of the requirements
to be tax-exempt?
A: To be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the
Internal Revenue Code, an organization must be organized and
operated exclusively for purposes set forth in section
501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private
shareholder or individual. In addition, it may not attempt to
influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities
and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or
against political candidates. |
